Daily blogging on Medium.com

I’m only 20 days into my daily blogging journey. When I started my blog, I decided to commit to a daily schedule for a few reasons.

The first is that committing to publishing something every day forces you to do the work. Good or bad, you need to ship something out before the day is over. This commitment has lead to writing more this last 3 weeks than I’ve written in the last 3 months. Which is exactly what I was going for.

The second reason is that the more work you put out, the better chance you have of getting seen. I love the baseball analogy because it parallels so well to being a content creator. Every time you share your work that is an at-bat. You won’t hit the ball every time, but you won’t get a hit unless you show up and swing.

The third reason is that it has the power to change your life. If you show up and do the work every day, it will change your life. I follow many authors, content creators, filmmakers, storytellers who got to where they are through the power of dailies. I figure if I commit now, it’ll pay off one day. It could be 2 years from now or 10 years from now. But so long as I’m consistent, I believe in the power of dailies.

When I made this commitment, I started posting all my dailies to Medium.com. I’ve been aware of medium for a while and figured if I want to improve my writing and build an audience as a writer, Medium would be a great place to do that.

The last 19 blog post all live on Medium. However, moving forward, I will not be posting my dailies to Medium.com. Here’s why:

The more I learn about Medium, the more I realize it pays to follow their algorithm. Like it literally pays. While I’m not blogging for the money, I would like to build audience overtime. The best way to do that is to get curated and submit to publications.

The best way to get curated and published in publications is to write meaningful pieces that offer the reader value. The longer someone reads, the more they interact with your article, the better chances of getting curated.

The current issue is that my dailies are sometimes meh. If I’m on a production, traveling, or busy, I might only get out a few hundred-word post written about something random on my mind. This content does not do well on Medium. It could if I was already an influencer with a following. But I’m not.

If I have 50 posts with 0 reads, it is my understanding that it’ll be much harder to get curated on Medium. So daily blogging the way I am is not ideal for Medium.

I’ve also written some fantastic articles, but they take longer than a day to write and proofread, and then submitting them to a publication could take a few days to get approved. Waiting days for a publication to approve my post ruins the one post everyday rule I have.

So from now on, I’ll play the game Medium wants me to play. I’m still committed to dailies, but for now, those will only exist here. This will be my safe place to spill my brain vomit. Medium will only be the best of the best.

As always, make it a great day or not; the choice is yours.
