Getting started.
Hi, I’m Tyce.
I’ve been making original content since 1994.
My favorite food could kill me anytime.
I own 6 snakes and a dope lizard.
My favorite film is Whiplash.
I know Pi to 38 digits.
I’ve driven coast to coast.
You will never find me without a pair of cool socks on.
And I’ve never had a blog before, until today.
This is my first post, so thank you for visiting.
Why am I starting a blog in 2021? After 26 years of life, I decided it was time to jump on this viral trend called blogging. I want to get in while the gettin’s good.
But it’s also because I want to hold myself accountable. My goal is to become a better writer, filmmaker, and creative.
This is me getting started.
My first video camera was my sister's Barbie VHS camera.
I’m not new to writing, filmmaking, or creative problem-solving.
My teacher told my parents that I would become an artist in preschool. Maybe she was trying to be nice, but it turned out she was right.
I’ve been working as a filmmaker for 10 years now. I filmed my first music video when I was 16. And I had my first paid internship in 2011.
I also have a BFA in Advertising, which I describe as the closest thing to a degree in creativity.
But I’ve become stale. Hardened by years of client work and constantly grinding to keep afloat.
Blogging is a way for me to do one thing each day to improve my writing, filmmaking, and creativity.
I’m not new to that act of creating something daily. I used to have a daily vlog back in 2015. It only lasted a month. But I got a small taste of what it was like to create something every day.
A vlog was quite ambitious and difficult to turn into a daily habit (I tip my hat to the daily vloggers out there.) I think a blog can be much more manageable and bring the same benefits.
I was born and raised in the cornfields of Iowa. That’s where I got my start. I moved to Savannah and attended the Savannah College of Art and Design. After graduation, I moved to NYC and worked a 9–5 at a big advertising agency.
I spent 8 hours a day wishing I could be doing my own thing. So I quit my job and started my own business. Instead of slaving away for good, consistent money, I started slaving away for anyone who would pay me. It turns out not many people wanted to pay me. It wasn’t quite the upgrade I was expecting.
With no consistent income and a lot of debt, I awaited the day the business would run out of money, close shop, and start applying for 9–5 jobs again. That was 4 years ago, and somehow I’m not going out of business yet.
My day to day is running WSPR Creative out of my production house in New Jersey.
My side hustle is being a wannabe YouTuber, making video essays, short films, and self-improvement content.
My free time is spent watching a movie, reading a book, or playing tennis.
And my new daily habit, starting today, February 12, 2021, is blogging.
I’m just getting started. And if you’re looking to create something, now’s the time. If I can do it, you can do it. It could be learning a new language, learning a new instrument, building a new skill, taking a class, joining the gym, writing a screenplay, starting a blog, starting a youtube channel, whatever it is, get started today. I don’t think we’re going to regret it.
Thanks for making it this far. I would love to know what it is you want to start. Please drop a comment below; I can’t wait to hear from you.
Make it a great day or not; the choice is yours.
