Be like a dog in the snow

I live with a Siberian Husky named Eekso. I thought pepperoni was the one thing she loved the most. She will do anything for a pepperoni. The moment a pepperoni is in my hand, the world around her fades away, and her sole focus is obtaining the delicious slice of beef pork.

But I was wrong. Pepperoni is not what Eekso loves the most. It’s snow.

I shouldn’t be too surprised since she is a Siberian Husky. With all this snow recently, I’ve been watching Eekso play outside. And it’s become the highlight of my days. At least someone is enjoying all this nasty weather.

There is a lot we can learn from dogs. But one thing I’ve been trying to implement in my own life is being more like a dog in the snow.

Not in the literal sense. I have no interest in chasing down squirrels, burring my snout in a pile of snow, or sniffing my own urine. But I want the sense of excitement for something so simple in life.

Eekso could be exhausted, hungry, and be in the middle of deep sleep. But the moment snow hits the ground, there is no doubt all of that would disappear, and she would take full advantage of the opportunity. The moment she steps outside, she dedicates every ounce of energy to enjoy the snow.

She will run as fast as she can. She will sniff every tree, rock, bush. She will chase every squirrel, deer, or fox. She will roll around, prance about, and execute every movement known to dog.

She would stay outside for as long as we let her. The hardest part is getting her to come back inside. Not even a pepperoni can coerce a dog in the snow.

If Eekso were to die that night, she would have no regrets, for she took full advantage of the opportunity given to her. She enjoyed her time to the fullest. Because that’s what dogs do, it is the nature of a dog to love and indulge in life’s simplest pleasures.

So while I have no interest in running around in the snow for hours on end, what is the simple life pleasure I can take advantage of? When I go to bed at night, how can I feel like Eekso does after a day in the snow? How can I live every day of my life like a dog in the snow?

They say, “A tired dog is a happy dog.” And I believe the same goes for us.

As always, thanks for reading this far. How do you plan to live every day like a dog in the snow? Let me know in the comments below.

Remember, make it a great day or not; the choice is yours.
